Britney Spears’ husband, Sam Asghari, has announced the end of their marriage after 14 months together, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The divorce petition was filed on Wednesday, with Sam Asghari, 29, and Britney Spears, 41, deciding to part ways. The couple got engaged in September 2021 and held a star-studded ceremony in June 2022.
Rumors of their marital struggles had circulated in US tabloids earlier this year. Britney Spears rose to global fame with her hit song “…Baby One More Time” at the age of 16, followed by chart-toppers like “Toxic,” “Womanizer,” and “Oops!…I Did It Again.”
Sam Asghari shared the news on his Instagram, stating, “After 6 years of love and commitment to each other, my wife and I have decided to end our journey together. We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other, and I wish her the best always. Shit happens. Asking for privacy seems ridiculous [sic], so I will just ask for everyone, including the media, to be kind and thoughtful.”
As of now, representatives for Britney Spears have not issued any comments regarding the divorce. In a post on the same Wednesday night, Britney did not address the divorce but mentioned that she was “buying a horse soon.”
In the divorce petition filed by Sam Asghari in Los Angeles County Superior Court, he is seeking spousal support and attorneys’ fees from Britney Spears. The couple first met in 2016 during the filming of Britney’s music video for “Slumber Party.”
Sam Asghari played a vocal role in supporting Britney’s fight to end her father Jamie’s conservatorship, a battle she triumphantly won a few months prior to their marriage. Their wedding, held at Britney’s home in Thousand Oaks, California, last year, was attended by notable celebrities like Paris Hilton, Madonna, and Drew Barrymore.
Recently, both Sam and Britney were spotted without their wedding rings in public. This separation comes as Britney is gearing up to release her memoir, “The Woman in Me,” this October. It marks the conclusion of her third marriage.
Her previous marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander in 2004 lasted only 55 hours, with the nuptials annulled at the insistence of her management team. Britney’s second marriage, to rapper Kevin Federline, lasted from 2004 to 2007, with Federline retaining sole custody of their two children.
