G20 Summit: Delhi schools and offices to remain shut from Sept 8 to 10

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has granted approval for a significant public holiday from September 8 to 10, coinciding with the upcoming G20 summit. This decision entails the closure of schools, government offices, and businesses within the New Delhi police district.

The primary motivation behind these measures is to ensure the smooth facilitation of the G20 summit, a high-profile international event that will witness the participation of 29 heads of state and leaders from various international organizations. To accommodate the dignitaries and ensure their secure travel, movement limitations and closures have been deemed necessary.

Notably, the Department of Education has instructed educational institutions to observe a holiday on September 8, 2023, for both students and staff members. This strategic move aims to alleviate potential congestion and streamline routes for the dignitaries as they navigate through the city.

The G20 summit’s prelude includes a series of events that are poised to provide attendees with a glimpse of Delhi’s cultural and artistic heritage. The leaders’ spouses are anticipated to partake in activities such as visiting the National Gallery for Modern Art and exploring other prominent city attractions.

The core of the summit, scheduled for September 9 to 10, is expected to witness the convergence of an impressive array of international figures. This assembly will consist of 29 heads of state, representatives from the European Union, select guest nations, and leaders representing 14 international organizations. To cater to the influx of attendees, numerous hotels across the Delhi-NCR region have been designated for accommodation.

Given the significance of the event and the attendance of such prominent figures, security arrangements are expected to be heightened across various strategic locations. Notable areas like Chandni Chowk, Khan Market, Dilli Haat, Connaught Place, and Malcha Marg Market are anticipated to experience enhanced security measures. While official advisories have not been released as of now, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated efforts to clear major roadways in the city, beginning on August 16.

To ensure smooth traffic management and facilitate safe travel for all attendees, the Delhi Police is expected to issue comprehensive traffic advisories specifically tailored for the G20 summit. These precautions and arrangements collectively underline the importance of ensuring a seamless and secure environment for the prestigious international event that the G20 summit represents.
