Taking a proactive stance against the rising incidents of unauthorized tree cutting, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has unveiled a strategic plan involving the deployment of four specialized squads. The primary objective of these squads is to curb the alarming trend of illegal tree cutting while concurrently promoting the conservation of the city’s green cover. This decision follows a recent event where a private company unauthorizedly felled eight trees within the Bhosari MIDC area.
The company in question had originally obtained authorization to trim tree branches near the Sant Tukaram Nagar metro station. However, it sidestepped this sanctioned action and instead chose to completely cut down the trees. This occurrence underscores a growing concern regarding widespread tree cutting, often driven by construction activities or the installation of advertising boards, across different sectors of the city. Alarmingly, even trees situated on private properties, including those under municipal ownership, have fallen victim to unapproved cutting.
In a robust response to this critical issue, the PCMC’s Garden Department has proactively introduced four distinct squads that are exclusively focused on preventing unlawful tree cutting. The deployment of these squads is intended to heighten vigilance and ensure swift action against any instances of unauthorized tree cutting.
To address such cases, authorities have committed to taking immediate legal measures, including the initiation of criminal proceedings. Pradeep Jambhale-Patil, the Additional Commissioner of PCMC, has further revealed the launch of a dedicated helpline named “Sarathi helpline.” This helpline serves as a vital resource for citizens to report unauthorized tree cutting incidents, enabling collective efforts in preserving the city’s invaluable green assets.
The PCMC’s decision to establish these squads and institute a dedicated helpline underscores its resolute dedication to environmental preservation and the preservation of the city’s ecological equilibrium.
