PM Modi Urges G20 to Share Tech and Prepare for Future Health Emergencies

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the G20 Health Ministers’ meeting in Gandhinagar through video conferencing, emphasizing the importance of sharing technology and being prepared for future health emergencies. He urged G20 nations to promote “equitable availability” of technology and encourage open innovations, highlighting the need for global readiness in preventing and responding to health crises.

Modi highlighted the lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic, underscoring the significance of placing health at the core of decisions and showcasing the value of international collaboration, whether in medical advancements, vaccine distribution, or repatriating individuals.

He stressed the role of digital solutions and innovations in ensuring healthcare accessibility, making efforts more inclusive and balanced. The Prime Minister emphasized the need to close the healthcare delivery gap in the Global South by facilitating equitable access to technology. This move, he believed, would contribute to the goal of achieving universal health coverage (UHC).

Modi acknowledged that the pandemic highlighted the interconnectedness of health issues globally, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for future health emergencies. He pointed out that health crises in one part of the world can have rapid and widespread effects.

During the pandemic, India’s Vaccine Maitri initiative provided over 300 million vaccine doses to more than 100 countries, including those in the Global South, showcasing India’s commitment to global health cooperation.

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s comprehensive approach to healthcare, including expanding health infrastructure, promoting traditional medicine systems, and ensuring affordable healthcare for all. He mentioned the establishment of the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in Jamnagar as a step towards holistic health and wellness.

Modi also shared India’s determination to eradicate tuberculosis (TB) well before the global target of 2030. He mentioned the Ni-kshay Mitra (Friends for Eradication of TB) initiative, where citizens have adopted nearly one million TB patients, contributing to India’s progress towards eliminating TB ahead of the global deadline.
