UP Congress Chief Announces Rahul Gandhi’s Candidacy from Amethi
According to the recently appointed Congress state president, Ajay Rai, it has been stated that senior party leader Rahul Gandhi will contest in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi. This announcement brings to mind the 2019 Lok Sabha polls when Rahul Gandhi faced defeat in Amethi against BJP leader and Union minister Smriti Irani.
Ajay Rai, who was greeted enthusiastically by his party supporters in Varanasi, emphasized the party’s commitment to supporting Priyanka Gandhi if she decides to contest from Varanasi. He conveyed that the political battle against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, which began in Varanasi, will be taken to every corner of the state.
When questioned about Rahul Gandhi’s and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s potential candidacy from Amethi and Varanasi respectively, Rai affirmed that Rahul Gandhi will indeed contest from Amethi, and if Priyanka Gandhi expresses her desire to contest from Varanasi, every Congress worker will wholeheartedly back her campaign.
Rai, referring to himself as “Rahul Gandhi ka sipahi” (Rahul Gandhi’s soldier), attributed his appointment as the state Congress chief to his relentless efforts. He spoke about his continuous struggle, including facing imprisonment and dealing with various challenges while exposing issues related to the BJP government.
Highlighting the momentum of the fight against Prime Minister Modi, Rai emphasized that this battle will now extend from Chandauli to Ghaziabad, encompassing the entirety of Uttar Pradesh.
Rai also discussed the prevailing atmosphere in the state, claiming that the BJP is fostering a climate of fear among the people, aided by central agencies such as the ED and the CBI. He mentioned Rahul Gandhi’s message that the Congress will counter this fear and spread its influence from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, reaching every village and household.
During his initial visit to Uttar Pradesh as the state unit president, Rai paid homage to the martyrs in Ghazipur and criticized the BJP’s alliance partner, Om Prakash Rajbhar of the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party. Rai expressed the party’s readiness to engage with the BJP on all fronts in the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha election, signaling the commencement of the election campaign from the sacred city of Varanasi.
